Accounting Manager
Location: Remote
The Accounting Manager is an exciting opportunity to be a critical part of the Accounting Team of a high growth organization that is dedicated to addressing the global smoking health and nicotine addiction epidemic. Reporting mainly to the Corporate Controller, the Accounting Manager will perform month-end, quarter-end and year end close activities as well as manage the Company’s accounts payable function. This position is a key member of the corporate accounting team and requires the ability to adapt to changing situations. The Accounting Manager is responsible for providing guidance, leadership and change management and experience in a public company would be an asset.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate and manage the month-end close related to G&A accounting including investment and equity reconciliations.
- Manage the accounts payable function including processing of invoices, coordinating payments and associated tasks.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly consolidated financial statements.
- Prepare quarterly schedules to support footnote disclosures in 10-Q and 10-K.
- Assist with updating and maintaining 10Q and 10K reports and other SEC filings
- Assist with preparing working papers for external auditors
- Assist with maintaining SOX documentation for standard process and process changes and annual SAS 70 analysis for service providers.
- Provide leadership and change management to improve the accounting processes for compliance, accuracy, and quality of information.
- Provide accounting guidance and implementation of new accounting standards as they impact the Company as requested.
- Review and audit expense reports for accuracy and completeness before approval.
- Run payroll for Canada and the UK
- File various tax returns, including but not limited to: GST, VAT, excise tax, personal property tax, franchise tax, employer health tax, 1099s.
- Assist with implementing effective internal controls, including a review of internal controls to meet Sarbanes Oxley requirements.
- Preparation of ad hoc accounting reports as required.
- Assists the PAO and/or the CEO with developing new policies, processes and procedures as well as improving existing ones.
- Performs other general accounting duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
- Diploma or degree in Accounting and have completed a recognized professional accounting program is required (CPA or equivalent).
- Minimum of 4years of accounting experience, preferably in a biotechnology environment.
- Accounting experience in a public company is beneficial.
- Knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley and SEC filing and compliance is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Practical knowledge of accounting operations and strong ethics
- Monitor and maintain the efficient flow of documents and information
- Experience using and maintaining Great Plains
- Experience with SEC filing software such as Active Disclosure
- Experience with Concur Expense and Invoice is an asset
- Proficient in MS Office with advanced skills in Excel
- Experience working with foreign currency exchange
- Understanding of Canadian/US GAAP and statutory regulations
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Able to work well within a consultative, team-oriented environment
